Monique and her army of volunteers have done a brilliant job of supplying thousands of meals to the local community – not just the homeless, but people struggling to clothe their children or put electricity in the meter. We have donated stock to Monique and it’s been a great opportunity find out more about Monique and DISC. Knowing there is someone who absolutely won’t judge, who will help anyone in need – and also challenge the stigma around homelessness and vulnerability is incredible. As a town and a community, we are lucky to have someone like Monique who I am sure will continue to work tirelessly to provide for whoever needs it. A legend whose legacy I think will continue for many years to come. (Laura Peters)
Always work hard to help those in need but during the tough times of the last year these wonderful volunteers have gone above and beyond to ensure meals are provided for those who need are there for support and advice. Cannot praise them highly enough. (Gail Perks)
They help everyone in the community that needs help. Always give 100% to everyone they help. Easily approachable. Easy to get hold of in times of needed. Friendly. Unable to nominate a specific person in the group due to everyone works together, and they help and support each other. DISC Newquay, its the volunteers that make DISC what is it. Each volunteer brings a skill set like no other, from the cooks that make and prepare 1000s of meals a week. Two of who have been there since the very start, to all the other volunteers that turn up every day doing what little they can. Most volnteers change from month to month however the few that have been there from the start make everyone welcome and treats everyone like they have been there for years. DISC cooks not only 1000s of meals a week, but they also give emotional support and get people in contact with other organisations They help with birthday and Christmas gifts, the list of things they do for their community is endless. (Angela McKendrick)

DISC is the most amazing Charity in Newquay, if not in the whole of Cornwall. They were feeding lots of vulnerable people before COVID and now help over 1000 individuals and families with healthy food and anything else needed. (Will Collins)

These people have raised money and food and fed the hungry and poor of Newquay all year. They have provided care and kindness too to adults and children alike. They have met the criteria many times over and cooked thousands of meals and distributed them. Selfless and amazing acts for the community. Fabulous. An award is so deserved. I have no doubt they have been a lifeline in this time of COVID. (Christine Parker)

Soul Food Kitchen
Soul Food are an amazing communtiy group that help prepare and serve food, using those that attend and helping them with social aspects of their lives. They have grown from strength to strength in recent years and have shone through during the pandemic by serving and delivering food to those in need in our town and yet they never ask for praise or try to stand out. They just go on and on and on to help make people in our community that need a little help feel better. (Jon Goodman)
Newquay Thursday Club
The Thursday club is a group of ladies that meet to support each other and to support the local community . They raise money for local charities with events throughout the year and during the past year they have raised thousands of pounds for the Newquay hydrotherapy pool and the Air Ambulance. They have been making face masks in their own time and selling them in the town for a cheap price. All the time to make and sell has been voluntary. The ladies deserve some recognition from the town for their contribution as they are all local ladies and work continuously to support others. The ladies would be honoured to receive the award from the town and would be worthy recipients for the community group award. (Emma Fox)
Newquay Support Service
Newquay Lions, Towan Blystra Lions and Newquay Rotary Club joined forces to create the Newquay Support Service, assisted by Newquay Town Council. All 3 organisations have provided tremendous support to the community during the COVID crisis from helping those who are shielding, undertaking shopping on behalf of people, keeping in contact with people to help their mental well-being, providing food, financial support, help with school uniforms through to marshalling at the health centres for individuals receding the vaccine. Their commitment in all weathers has been outstanding and their dedication unstinting. (Zoe Dixon)
Newquay District Nursing
Newquay District Nursing team deliver and support Newquay residents on daily basis 365 days of the year. Last year when COVID 19 reared its ‘ugly’ head we were all a little bit in the dark. However as always Nurse and the nursing family stepped up to the plate and worked over an above to ensure that the services they provided where maintained. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure like everyone at the beginning they had their own misgivings as they like us all how no real experience in managing a pandemic. This group of professional nurses would have had fears for their own and their families health but still had to remain focused and professional and carry on working to deliver their services. The NHS as always was there for all free at the point of the delivery and I’m sure there were times when some of the team may have thought ‘I’d loved to be furloughed’. No such chance. So I’m not going to say anymore they are a group of professionals managed by their Team Leader Jacky Carre most of whom live and work in Newquay and whether we have a pandemic or not have always strived to give the best care to Newquay residents, so lets show huge thanks and appreciation of the work they undertake tirelessly and award them the Group award in 2021 Newquay Town Council Awards.
