Cruse Bereavement Care Friendship Group
Community Awards - Outstanding Group Award
When my husband sadly passed away 5 years ago, I felt totally lost and lonely. During my appointment with a local funeral director I was given information about a Newquay Friendship Group run by CRUSE. Attending for the first time was difficult as I felt nervous and didn’t know what to expect. But the volunteers there were so friendly and welcoming that I soon felt at ease. Whilst attending the group, which is held the first Tuesday of every month 11am until 1pm and 2pm until 4pm, I benefitted greatly, by being able to make new friends with people who are in a similar situation to me. We go on outings and have guest speakers and entertainment at times. The group, in Newquay, have been running for 14 years and I really believe they contribute greatly to the local community. Friends of Trenance Cottages Newquay
The friends, or volunteers, of Trenance Cottages Newquay are exceptional. They fought hard to save the site, they collaborated with various services to restore the site, and now they continue to engage with the public to preserve the heritage site. They keep the Cottages open all year round by stewarding the museum – offering locals and visitors a free attraction that showcases Newquay’s heritage. They create events and raise funds for the charity, and other charities as well. They simply offer an extraordinary service to the general public and to Newquay. It’s not just their time, but it is their passion and enthusiasm for Newquay’s heritage – and when stewarding the museum, they offer exceptional customer service. They are incredible! Newquay Marine Group
NMG contribute so much to the preservation and conservation of our local marine environment. From litter picks to shore studies, they are leading the way in how to cohesively and effectively work with the community to raise awareness and actually act on the plight of our oceans. (Jessica Channing)
Newquay Surf Life Saving Club
Founded in 1958, we continue to provide education, prevention and rescue services to assist with reducing preventable drownings within the UK. We have 200 members, over half are young individuals, falling into the categories of Sandhoppers (aged 5-7), Nippers (aged 7-12) and Youth (aged 13-18). These members train on a weekly basis in water safety, lifesaving skills and progress to undertake lifesaving and lifeguard qualifications, which leads to employment. Our membership is continuing to grow, and we are expanding the club facility to support our growing membership. In 2019 we saw the delivery of our largest lifeguard course supporting over 30 members from Newquay, Lusty and Watergate Bay SLSC’s. We delivered the first SLSGB first responder qualification and also ran several scenario evenings which attracted good levels of participation. In addition to the lifesaving qualifications we saw many members qualify as level 1 / 2 sport coaches. These are vital qualifications many of the volunteer coaches undertook to support our members and voluntary patrols. In addition to the coaching awards we saw our biggest up take of the tube rescuer qualification. This is a supporting qualification for providing water safety cover at the club training sessions and a requirement of the club to provide the mandatory water safety ratios. We also provide a rescue / prevention volunteer community service. With an increase in water users throughout the winter months, there is a demand by the local community for additional lifesaving and lifeguard cover at Fistral Beach. Therefore, the club provides an audited and maritime coastguard agency approved, volunteer lifeguard patrol throughout the winter, every Sunday as well as providing additional lifeguard patrols on summer evenings. These additional patrols benefit the whole community and those visiting the area by providing a safe area to bathe, swim, body board or surf. (Julia Sharland)
Rialton Community Group
This group has revived the community at Rialton Heights by Bingo session lunch clubs quiz nights. They raise money for Christmas lights for Rialton and do Christmas dinners and parties all by fund raising with jumble sales and cake bakes. Before they started the community hall was never used. It has made such a difference to all the elderly who live there. (Cheryl Slagle)
Soulfood Kitchen Newquay
Soulfood as a group tirelessly & selflessly provide a social time based around food, for anyone in the community that are homeless or feel socially excluded. It is a great concept as the people attending are the ones that provide the service under the amazing guidance from the awesome Beth Mitchell. They provide music and quizzes each week and grow from strength to strength each year and help people get a foot hold in society and move forward, such an invaluable group of people. (John Goodman)
