Dubbed as one of the best DJ’s in Cornwall he has continuously strived to help others and is a very selfless person. Throughout the lockdowns Rob has been doing live streams to raise money for the NHS and Mind Charities and most recently helped curate the Feel The Love Festival for the Mayors Charities – being an unsung hero. He is a great example for people to follow and continues to share the love and spread a bit of joy throughout the town. (Eryn Murray)
Alex Russell
From the first time I met Alex, back in a Newquay Youth community work group, has never failed to shine through whatever circumstance he’s presented with. Having dealt with his own health issues and coming out the other end fighting strong. Alex has recently had some life changing events happen in his life and has instead, used these to drive him to help the communities in many ways. He volunteers for a community mental health organisation, giving out food to the homeless and helping those who need help even and especially throughout the pandemic. He’s voluntarily, completely off of his own back tidied up the neighbourhoods and town, weeding the roads / pavements. He’s made a huge difference to the local town and paths. Pushing a wheel barrow around all day and weeding, simply to improve Newquay. He’s always at the end of the line to help others when they’re in need, in these unprecedented times, despite losing his sister to suicide this year. He is one of life’s truly, Good eggs.’ Alex is one incredible man who deserves this award more than anything. (Rocky Poole)
Alex has been volunteering with DISC for the last 6 or so months, he as been inspiration to other young people within DISC. (Angela McKendrick)
Tracy Lobb
Tracy is amazing. If there is a lost dog, an animal that needs help, Tracy is there. Always helping. She volunteers to do home checks for the last chance hotel, and the homeless at the church, disc. She makes a difference every single day with random acts of kindness. Newquay us a better place with her in it and I’m really proud to be able to say she is my friend. (Lisa Malone)
Nigel Dawes
Nigel Dawes has been a stalwart of Treloggan residents association over the past number of years. He has helped transform and maintain the doorstep pond area for the benefit of the residents, he has been put in all weathers, cutting back overgrowth, weeding, clearing the pond you name it, he has turned his hand to it. He has campaigned for the new play park and been instrumental in the design and the project coming to fruition. In addition he has been the secretary and treasurer for the residents association, producing agendas, minuting meetings, managing the bank account, submitting grant applications, paying bills and generally ensuring the association is in good order. Finally he has become a director of the newly set up Community Interest Company responsible for delivering the Polwhele Permaculture Garden.
A keen photographer and a committed citizen, everything Nigel has done has been for the good of the community and he is a much loved member of Treloggan. Sadly just before the new year Nigel collapsed and was taken to hospital, whilst tests ruled out a stroke, it seems Nigel was struck down by some terrible brain virus which within a very short space of time has robbed him of his quality of life and he is now in a hospice receiving care having lost many things that you and I take for granted including now his sight. Nigel’s friends in Treloggan and throughout Newquay send him and his wife Jo their love. (Zoe Dixon)
Sadly Nigel passed away recently. Over the last few years he has worked tirelessly for the Cricket Club and Treloggan residents association. He would do anything for anyone and always with a smile. He never grumbled and always put all his effort into any work required. He will be missed by both organisations and will be irreplaceable. (Christine Hunter)
He was just an outstanding citizen of our local area and very dedicated to the Doorstep Green and making our area a happier and nicer place to be. He was involved in the Polwehele Permaculture Garden and went every day and did litter picking or cut the grass and sort the plants. Always speak to people and well known within the community area. This man have gone above and beyond for many people in the local area doing shopping and collection of medication driving people to and from hospital he has even picked up the first load of vaccination from London all in his own time such and generally nice human. (Jacob Smart)
Melissa King
Melissa is a work colleague and although she has a busy and often stressful job as a clinical lead for a local charity, she also makes a huge effort in clearing the beaches in and around Newquay of litter and debris on a regular basis on her early morning walks before work. This was particularly so after the first COVID-19 Lockdown was lifted and there were many more visitors to Newquay. Sadly Melissa had to pick up after people who did not show the same respect and love towards the natural beauty of the environment as her, often leaving items including nappies, toilet paper and even used sanitary products as well as general rubbish. Melissa would collect two or three rubbish sacks just on her daily morning walk with her dog Charley. I know Mel used to get annoyed with the disrespect of the beach goers, but continued to clean the beaches without expecting or asking for recognition. (Sarah Snell)
Sue Jones
Sue has served on the Parish Council for years, and during lockdown (despite illness and limited mixing due to restrictions). Sue has baked for our community, kept others buoyed and done such a lot to help us all. She’s in her 80’s (don’t tell her I told you that!) and is an absolute superstar. She also writes a piece for most Dreckly magazines (Parish publication, voluntary) (Bonita Snook)

She gave birth to her first child in the autumn of 2020 working right through until the end of her pregnancy but sadly her baby girl died 3 days later. Jay Jay however still continued to donate her time to volunteering through her anguish and pain. (Amy-Claire Hill)
Because even though she lost a baby a couple of days after it was born she has continued to work tirelessly for DISC in Newquay (Amanda Ward)
Since the start of the pandemic 2020, Jay has volunteered with Newquay DISC as the head cook, volunteering 4 sometimes 5 days a week and is always available to help no matter the day. Jay is an amazing example of young adults today and has put others before her own needs. (James Topp)
Jay Jay (22) started to volunteer as a cook at DISC Newquay, providing meals for the hardest hit during the pandemic, last year. She continued to work throughout her pregnancy and after the premature birth and tragic death of her daughter. When most people would have given up she has continued to help others. I feel she is a shining example of a selfless young lady and a reflection of her family and community. (Lou Handley)
Jay deserves this has she has been committed and professional in all aspects of the work she does for DISC. She is supportive to her colleges and those that use the facility which is testament to her and for someone her age to actually care for the people. (Colin Gibson)

This is just a very small amount of not only what she does for her community but the larger community as well. She is the kind of person that stands in the shadows and pushes other people forward and takes no credit for herself, she is a true champion. (James Topp)

Our residents have have safe window visits with families and calls on Whatsapp. Weekends and evenings work along with her amazing Deputy Kay. Sue continues to smile and support others even through her time of hurt as a manager she has really put her whole life into the home. (Trish Nelmes)
Martin Hegwell
The Porth Heritage Boards on the Promenade and across Porth Beach by the car park were masterminded by Martin Hewgill. They took 3 years to complete. He researched all aspects required to get the information whether it was personal contact. books, libraries, both local and achive, museums, local knowledgeable residents, Newquay Old Cornwall Society and numerous local and distant people with information and photographs etc. He also had to engage map designers and printers and a firm to make and put the boards on display. Councillors were hosted when discussions took place to decide on the safe placing of the boards and to advise on costing, layout and appropriateness. Finally a ceremony was arranged to which Councillors, Mayor, contributors, our Porth Resident Association members and the public were invited. The heritage boards are regularly read and photographed and well commented on and are an asset to the history of the Porth Beach area and to the Newquay area in general. (Jean Smith)
Lora Millward
Having played for Newquay Hockey Club for many years, Lora has also worked tirelessly off the pitch and behind the scenes on the committee whilst regularly coaching and managing our junior squads too. In the past she has fulfilled the time consuming role of Club Secretary and in more recent years has taken on the role of Chairman. As a working mother of two, she works endlessly to raise the profile of the sport in our town thinking of creative solutions to attract new players despite us not having a pitch to call ‘home’ in the town itself. Not one to be beat, Lora leads her committee with enthusiasm and tenacity, drumming up interest for the new intake of club members by promoting the club at every opportunity. She insists that junior training sessions remain to run in the town, ensuring that the young boys and girls of Newquay can access hockey sessions locally. Unfortunately, for almost two decades now, the club has had to use Penair pitch in Truro as their home ground for its senior members because the surface in Newquay was no longer deemed suitable for hockey league and cup games when it was resurfaced with a 3G rubber crumb surface. Since this installation, Lora has campaigned passionately and relentlessly; liaising with local schools, businesses and the media to gain momentum and support, ensuring the issue isn’t forgotten and with a hope that one day, Newquay Hockey Club will be training and competing back in Newquay where it belongs. We are so lucky to have such a steadfast and dedicated Charmain leading our club and striving to create these opportunities. This is a dream she will never give up on and she deserves recognition for her ongoing commitment to our club, sport and community. (Liz Burnett)
Christopher Chard
This Chap walked around Cornwall to raise awareness and money for Mental Health in the armed forces in October, battling horrible weather conditions and blister to complete his tasks, I think he deserves recognition of what he has done and will continue to do. (Harry)
