The first concept design of the Killacourt® included the following features, many of which are present in the final designs;
- Improved paths and beach access
- Temporary farmers market
- Palm tree boulevard with brand new seating area
- Uplighted and more accessible path network
- Restoration of existing Band Stand
- Pop-up shops
Why have the plans changed?
Through the public consultation process the designs went through several iterations to address concerns of Councillors and residents. The first redesign included a major omission, which was the Amphitheatre. Once the site was devolved from Cornwall Council a Cliff Stability survey was undertaken as part of the Town Council’s due diligence as new landowner. This identified that where the theatre was proposed would not be suitable or recommended. To substitute this, the grass area outside the Band Stand was ‘stepped’ to allow a natural seating area.
All the other features proposed in that early concept still remained. Through lengthy consultation both the residents and Councillors had concerns over the impact on views and the amount of open space being lost to areas such as the proposed farmers market and the new pathways. Therefore the designs needed further review.
The Palm trees were removed due to the impact they would have on the views across the site. The farmers market was no longer hard standing and the proposed shelters removed due to impacting the views from Chymeddon. The ‘stepped’ area outside the Band Stand was also reduced to unlock more open space.
The final designs represented the culmination of months of consultation with residents, businesses, Town Councillors and Cornwall Council. This last iteration of the design which was submitted and approved by Cornwall Council (PA19/11095) retained most of the key features from those early concept drawings.
